Although this blog has started well into the production of the R & F video, I am going to post some early production items here so that I have something to go back to and look at how it has unfolded. It will also be great to have them all laid out together in one location. For the first few posts, I am going to include some of the early images and design concepts. Until I get caught up with where I currently am in the production, this blog is going to be a bit scattered and out of sync. So here goes...
I my first meeting with SJ, after we talked about how much we enjoyed each other's work, we basically went through the script line by line and discussed the visuals. Since the song involves a lot of characters and settings, we thought it might be cool to give it a consistent set of bookends. The idea was to set this as a concert at a bar owned by Barbecue, and start with Rap Viper performing on stage. Well, it just so happened that a fellow Joe fan, Jason Petrini, made a custom Rap Viper figure.

At first I was concerned that it was not in the vintage style, but after thinking about it, it might work better that he is different, since he is going to be booed off the stage at the start of the video. I am also now thinking that it might work even better that ALL of the figures in the bar scene are in a modern style, and the rest of the scenes are flashbacks to the vintage days. Because one thought was to put those scenes as part of a video screen on the stage, and then zoom into them during the song. Most of that can be decided in post. Anyway, I am digging this figure and can wait to bring him fully to life.
Speaking of the opening scene, here are a few images of source photos, props, and set pieces that may or may not be used as part of the bar scene. Being the scene that both opens and closes the video, I am taking my time putting it together because it will be the first and last impression from this video, making it the most important scene in the video, so it is important to get it right, and also take it to a higher level of production.

This is part of the wall that will be used as the outside of the bar, it will either be the main entrance or the side loading entrance. This awesome set piece was made by my good friend Bill Stevens, who is a budding potter, but also a terrific artist. When he presented me with this, I knew that my vision for the opening scene was possible. Amazing work!
Well, I think that is a decent first post to get the blog started. Just putting this together has made me more excited about the process of making this video and I can't wait to get to work!
